BBC - Digital Picture of Britain
BBC learning and Interactive were interested in creating a web site to accompany the ‘Picture of Britain’ series. A nationwide photographic portrait of Britain through audience contribution of images.
.
To infom a design stratgegy they needed to understand better the nature of on-line photography sites, who contributed what and why.
They wanted insight as to what would motivate large numbers to contribute to the BBC site and what would be the best format - competition or open-format.
I carried out a snapshot survey of behavioural changes associated with digital camera use and what people did with these photos on-line.
To explore the potential of a ‘Picture of Britain’ I led an audience insight workshop with amateur digital photographers.
We uncovered people’s current behaviours, motivations for contributing and co-created ‘ideal’ photographic missions.
This insight was used to develop a design strategy for the Bafta winning site which now contains the BBC’s largest collection of images - over 80,000.
